The cask is fabricated in accordance with TAG Technical Solutions, LLC. Drawing No. STD-00-001, Sheets 1 and 2, Revision 0. This steel encased lead shielded cask is an 86-1/16 inches high (cask bottom to side wall top) right circular cylinder with a side wall outside diameter of 83.5 inches. The side walls consist of 1.88 inches of lead incased in 0.38-inch steel inner shell and 0.88-inch thick outer shell. The cask bottom is two 2 inch steel plates.
The primary lid cover is two 2-inch steel plates. The cask primary lid closure is eight, 1-3/4 inch ratchet binders. The secondary lid is centered in the primary lid and is secured by eight, 3/4 inch studs and nuts. Each lid sealed by a neoprene gasket.
Four equally spaced lugs welded to the outer shell are used for tie downs and lifting. There are three primary lid-lifting lugs. The secondary lid had one lifting lug.
The cask design includes a drain port and a lid test port. The cask interior includes a 12-gauge stainless steel liner (optional).
A specific trailer is dedicated for each cask to ensure optimal weight distribution and control. All casks accept 55-gallon drums in addition to liners and high integrity containers to maximize radioactive waste payload efficiencies. Each licensed cask is loaded according to a specific handling procedure.
